Free The Girls

Grettal’s life looks very different now than when she was younger. She was trafficked on the streets of Costa Rica as a child and was later coerced into becoming a madam to make ends meet. Grettal felt shame about her own exploitation and guilt for bringing other women into the same situation. She often relied on alcohol and other substances to numb her pain.

After realizing her daughters were also in prostitution, Grettal decided to commit to a different life—but she didn’t know where to start. Through Free The Girls, Grettal was able to make a livable wage, save enough money to make needed repairs to her house, and gain vital skills that set her up for success. All three of her daughters who had previously been exploited are now participating in our programs as well!

“Being able to decide what to do with my life—that is my freedom.”

Today, Grettal supports three generations in a beautiful example of a reunified family. Her determined spirit will continue inspiring other women in her life. Grettal’s success helped her daughters find alternative ways to provide for their own families, breaking the cycle of abuse, oppression, and sex trafficking.

“She’s like a superhero to me,” Grettal’s daughter says. “There is no mom like her.”
